Volunteer Coaching Basics & Expectations

Thank you for volunteering to coach with BASA. Our coaches play a critical role in creating a positive, fun, and safe experience for every player.

This page covers the key expectations and guiding principles for all BASA coaches. You don’t need to know everything at once — use this as a reference throughout the season.

Your Role as a Coach

  • Create a fun, safe, and positive environment for all players
  • Focus on development over winning
  • Ensure all players get equal playing time
  • Set the tone for sportsmanship and respect
  • Help players learn the game at an age-appropriate level

BASA Philosophy

At BASA, our focus is simple:

For the kids… For the fun of it.

We prioritize player development, enjoyment, and sportsmanship over competition. Coaches are expected to model this philosophy in every practice and game.

Coach Expectations & Code of Conduct

  • Support a positive coaching environment
  • Encourage effort, learning, and teamwork
  • Do not yell at or criticize players
  • Respect referees, opponents, and other coaches
  • Be a role model for players and parents
  • Keep practices age-appropriate and safe

Safety & Basic Requirements

  • Shin guards are required at all practices and games
  • No jewelry allowed
  • Proper footwear (soccer cleats or tennis shoes — no baseball cleats)
  • Players must wear appropriate clothing

What are Coaches Responsible For?

  • Communicating key information to your team
  • Organizing practices
  • Preparing players for games
  • Reinforcing league rules and expectations
  • Supporting referees and game flow
