Beginning with the fall season of 2000, BASA initiated a
U10 Majors Select Soccer program for both boys and girls. BASA will field three
boys and three girls Majors teams each season. The Majors program is an
introduction to Select level soccer. Majors are more competitive than the
recreational soccer program and the players are selected through a tryout
process that coincides with Select try-outs held every June. Currently, our
Majors teams play two games per weekend, usually on Friday evening and
Saturday/Sunday afternoon. The schedules are set at the beginning of each
season. Typically, our Majors teams play a total of eight games per season –
four against other BASA Majors teams and four (2 home/2 away) against Saginaw’s Majors teams.
The Majors teams wear the standard reversible BASA soccer jersey as their
uniform.
U10 age players (8/9 years old)
that desire a more competitive level of soccer plus a higher level of coaching
are encouraged to consider the BASA Majors Select Soccer program. Coaches that
want to develop their skills at a competitive level are also encouraged to join
the Majors program.

BASA, along with other Bay County
recreational and parochial school soccer programs, is a main provider of
skilled soccer players to our local high schools. To offer skilled players the
opportunity to play at a higher level of competitive soccer and attain a higher
level of coaching, BASA introduced the Select Soccer program. Since 1999, BASA
has made great strides in providing Select teams that play attractive soccer
while competing equally with surrounding communities. Select Soccer requires a higher
level of commitment from players, coaches and parents.
The following sections will
provide information to those families and players interested in our Select
Soccer program.

The current fee (Fall 2005) for BASA Select Soccer is $110.00 for the
Seasonal Year (Fall and Spring). This fee is to be paid in full each Fall season.
No refunds will be given if you do not play the entire seasonal year.

Our navy with white trim uniforms
cost each player between $60.00 and $90.00, depending on availability when
ordering. A BASA Select uniform is required to be included on the BASA Select
roster. Our uniforms include (2) numbered jersey’s (both navy and alternate
solid white), navy shorts and socks.

The Select game schedule is set
by the head coaches at the MMYSL meeting held one month prior to each season
(in August and March). Select games may be scheduled on any day of the week. Our
BASA coaches make every attempt to schedule games on the weekends, but
sometimes a weeknight game is necessary. Usually, the Select teams play one
home game and one away game each weekend throughout the season. Our home games
are scheduled in the afternoon on Saturday’s to provide visibility to our
recreational players and parents. Sunday home game starting times are scheduled
between 12:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

The drive time for Select games
in MMYSL varies from 30 minutes to 90 minutes. Opponents in the past include
Goodrich, Mount Pleasant, Midland,
Saginaw, Clio, Flushing, Swartz Creek and Owosso. Players are
encouraged to arrive one hour prior to game time for home and away games to
allow for proper warm-up. Parents are responsible for getting players to all
practice sessions and all games.

The BASA Select teams attempt to
play in one select tournament during the regular season. The tournaments are a
great way to hone soccer skills and teamwork while playing some very good teams
from around the state and around the country.

Team Roster
The BASA Select teams have a
roster of 14 to 18 players. The teams are selected through a tryout process.
The main tryout for the team is held in June of each year. If a Select team has
an opening after the fall season concludes, a tryout may be held in November. A
player that is selected for a Select team in June remains on the team for one
full year (two seasons) from June to June. If a player decides not to play in
the spring season, the head coach may decide to hold a tryout in November to
replace non-returning players. If the Select team roster falls below 14 players, a tryout must be held in order to meet the required
minimum roster of 14 players.

Select / Majors Try-outs
During the try-out process,
coaches are evaluating the following technical player skills and
characteristics: passing and receiving ability, shooting ability and proper
technique, plus dribbling and ball handling ability. Coaches are also
evaluating the following age-specific tactical skills: movement with and
without the ball, individual and group defending skills, player speed, team
play, communication and on-field leadership. Considerations for use of both
feet, ability to turn the ball, shielding, accuracy and pace of passing are all
part of the evaluation criteria. The coaching staff of each team develops their
own try-out agenda and criteria within the BASA Select Guidelines. All players
for a specific team will run through the same drills and stations to be
evaluated equally. Players are allowed to try-out both nights if they so
choose. The higher try-out ratings for a player that participates both nights
are the player’s final rating, i.e. if a player scores 82 on the second night
of try-outs and 93 on the first night, the coach will
use the ratings from the first night. A try-out session can last anywhere from
30 minutes to 3 hours, depending on the number of participants.

The BASA Select program
discourages any attempt to move a player up into a higher age level than their current
age. Any player wishing to move into a higher age level must send a letter to the BASA league President no later than two weeks
before a tryout is scheduled. Player safety is our primary concern for players
at all levels. The size difference between players one year apart in age can be
significant. The Select Board will consider all requests to play-up one age
level. BASA will only allow a player to play-up one age level.

All Select games will include a
Head Referee and two Assistant Referees. All referees in the MMYSL Select
program must have current USSF Certification. Referee fees for select games are
significantly higher than fees for our recreational program.

BASA requires all Select head
coaches to have as a minimum a USSF “E” Coaching License within one year of
being awarded a head coaching position for a Select team. A USSF “E” License
requires 16 hours (one full weekend) of coaching instruction by certified MSYSA
USSF coaching instructors. A USSF “D” License requires 32 hours (2 full
weekends) of coaching instruction by certified MSYSA USSF coaching instructors.
A USSF “C” License requires 5 consecutive days of instruction. For more
information regarding USSF coaching licenses, please visit www.msysa.net. The license instruction sessions
teach many soccer drills to coaches, but are meant to impress a method of
coaching that will help the coach teach soccer skills from a technical and
tactical standpoint.
The Head Coach
may select up to (2) Assistant Coaches.

While all coaches are encouraged
to include all players in each game, there is no requirement that each player
plays a set percentage of a Travel game. The Head Coach will determine to
amount of time each player will be on the field during a Travel game. The U11
and U12 age levels play two 35-minute halves. The U13 and U14 age level play
two 40-minute halves.

Training Camps
The Head Coaches may decide to
hold a camp for the Travel team prior to an upcoming season. These camps have
included professionally coached clinics by Drago, MLS
Camps and Tom Anagnost. Travel team camps will be
held at the BASA complex. The week long camps are held in late July or early
August.
